{"id":1754,"date":"2015-08-08T14:26:43","date_gmt":"2015-08-08T14:26:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldoftravelling.com\/blog\/?p=1754"},"modified":"2015-08-15T18:31:14","modified_gmt":"2015-08-15T18:31:14","slug":"the-ridgeway-87-miles-overton-hill-to-ivinghoe-beacon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldoftravelling.com\/blog\/?p=1754","title":{"rendered":"The Ridgeway &#8211; 87 miles &#8211; Overton Hill to Ivinghoe Beacon."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Ridgeway National Trail stretches 87 miles (139km) across five counties, starting at Overton Hill near Avebury in Wiltshire and passing through Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Hertfordshire and ending at Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire.<\/p>\n<p>The Ridgeway is often described as &#8216;the oldest road in Britain&#8217;. It&#8217;s clear that parts of the route were in use 5000 years ago (or more). The Ridgeway, as we know it today, is in fact the middle section of the Greater Ridgeway, an ancient system of tracks that stretches from Lyme Regis on the Dorset coast up to Hunstanton on the Norfolk coast.<span style=\"line-height: 28px;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b> Day One: Overton Hill to Ogbourne St George &#8211; 9 1\/4 miles.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This section of the walk has many interesting sights, including the historically rich village of Avebury.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/worldoftravelling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/IMG_4938-e1439139947444.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1786\" src=\"http:\/\/worldoftravelling.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/IMG_4938-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_4938\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Day Two: Ogbourne St George to Sparsholt Firs &#8211; 16 miles.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This stage provides easy walking along incredibly broad grassy tracks. There are some great views plus several interesting archaeological sites and natural phenomena worth investigating.
