The most famous and best restored of the Yucat\u00e1n Maya sites, Chich\u00e9n Itz\u00e1, while tremendously overcrowded \u2013 every gawker and his or her grandmother is trying to check off the new seven wonders of the world \u2013 will still impress even the most jaded visitor. I have to admit that I was pretty well OD’d on Maya sites at this point but I was very impressed indeed.<\/p>\n

It doesn’t take long to realise why the Maya site of Chich\u00e9n Itz\u00e1 is one of Mexico’s most popular tourist draws. Approaching the grounds from the main entrance, the striking castle pyramid El Castillo jumps right out at you – and the wow factor never lets up.<\/p>\n

The heat, humidity and crowds in Chich\u00e9n Itz\u00e1 can be fierce; it is best to explore the site either early in the morning or late in the afternoon.<\/p>\n
