Sigiriya Rock \u2014 also known as Lion Rock \u2014 is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Rising dramatically above the surrounding jungle and plains, this ancient fortress and palace complex rewards visitors with incredible views, remarkable frescoes and a fascinating history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I set off on foot from my accommodation, Sigiri Lion Lodge, at exactly 06:00, just as it was starting to get light. Even at that time, there were already plenty of vehicles heading in the same direction. It was clear that Sigiriya was going to be busy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What I hadn’t realised was that, even before I had woken up, people had already been queuing at the entrance, ready to buy their tickets and make the climb in time for sunrise. I got to meet many of them as they were making their way back down while I was still heading up!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History of Sigiriya Rock – The Kasyapa story.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sigiriya wasn\u2019t always a tourist climb \u2014 it was once the seat of a king\u2019s capital. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the late 5th century, Prince Kasyapa seized the throne from his father, King Dhatusena. Determined to build a protected palace away from threats, he chose this sheer rock and its surrounding landscape as his stronghold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word Sigiriya comes from \u201cSinha-giri\u201d meaning Lion Rock \u2014 named for the giant lion structure that once marked the entrance. After an 18-year reign, Kasyapa fell in battle against his brother Moggallana and the site was abandoned, eventually becoming a monastery. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Climb \u2014 What to Expect<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lower Platforms and Lion\u2019s Paws<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once inside, you\u2019ll walk past the Lion\u2019s Paws \u2014 the massive stone remnants of what was once a huge lion gateway. This is where the climb really begins: a steep, narrow staircase that hugs the rock face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At one time a gigantic brick lion sat at this end of the rock, and the final ascent to the top commenced with a stairway that led between the lion\u2019s paws and into its mouth. The lion symbolism serves as a reminder to devotees ascending the rock that Buddha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frescoes & Cliffside Views<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along the way, you\u2019ll spot ancient frescoes \u2014 delicate paintings that have survived centuries \u2014 and spectacular views of the surrounding plains and gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Metal Staircases to the Top<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final ascent is via narrow metal staircases attached to the rock\u2019s sheer vertical surface. At times it feels precarious, but the effort is rewarded with unforgettable vistas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tips for climbing Sigiriya<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Start early: The morning is cooler and, if you’re lucky, you’ll avoid some of the larger crowds.
– Wear suitable shoes: There are plenty of steps, and the metal staircases can become slippery when wet.
– Stay hydrated: Even early in the morning, Sri Lanka’s heat and humidity can quickly become noticeable.
– Take your time: There are plenty of places to stop, admire the views and catch your breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Personal Reflection<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Climbing Sigiriya was both physically rewarding and intellectually fascinating. From the political drama surrounding its creation to the climb up its steep rock faces, it’s a site that brings together nature, architecture, art and history in a way that few places can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, the early start was definitely worthwhile. Watching the landscape gradually emerge as the light improved \u2014 while making my way higher and higher up Lion Rock \u2014 made the experience even more memorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cobra Hood Cave; a visit by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1954<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The rocky projection known as the Cobra Hood Cave earned its name because the overhang resembles a fully opened cobra\u2019s hood. The plastered interior of the cave was once embellished with floral and animal paintings; a couple of faint traces remain. Below the drip ledge is an inscription from the 2nd century BC that indicates it belonged to Chief Naguli, who donated it to a monk.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
