Xcalak.

Xcalak POP 380.

The rickety wooden houses, beached fishing launches and lazy gliding pelicans make this tiny town plopped in the middle of nowhere a perfect escape. Blessed by virtue of its remoteness and the Chinchorro atoll (preventing the creation of a cruise-ship port), Xcalak may yet escape the development boom.

I stayed in a lovely cheap condo owned by Gallos and his family.

One of the best culinary surprises I had in Mexico was at Leaky Palapa Restaurant. Run by two Canadian ladies, the food here is amazing. I am not a snobby restaurant patron but I do know good food from bad, and this place is unbelievable. Marla and Linda are culinary rock stars.

XTC Divers came highly recommended by a dive centre in Honduras. It’s a very personable experience here and the dive sites are incredible.

Next stage: Tulum.

About Richard Griffith

My first independent travel experience was a trip to Israel, in 1997, it was here that I caught the 'travel' bug! In 2001 I took an 8-month sabbatical and traveled around South East Asia. Since then I have managed to visit most of Eastern Europe along with India, Bangladesh, and a few other destinations in between. I love travel and I love meeting new people.
